International Fraud Awareness Week (IFAW) is a timely reminder for all of us to reflect on how we can continue to protect our NHS from fraud, corruption, and bribery. While much of our focus during this week is on supporting the wider health sector, we must lead by example and reinforce these messages internally, at the NHS Counter Fraud Authority (NHSCFA).
Our new digital toolkit for International Fraud Awareness Week (IFAW), which runs from 16-22 November, is now live. NHSCFA's Corporate Communications Team has produced a range of digital resources to support you with your local IFAW events, meetings and communication platforms. Access the toolkit here and amplify the vital work you're doing across the NHS, fraud sector and beyond.
Fraud is not a distant threat; it’s a real and ongoing risk. As a public body, even a single instance of fraud can damage the trust we’ve worked hard to build. That’s why it’s vital that every one of us, even at the NHSCFA, remains alert, understands the risks, and feels confident in speaking up when something doesn’t seem right. Anyone with a genuine interest in countering fraud can join in. Our collective vigilance and integrity are the foundations of effective fraud prevention.
What can you do?
Preventing fraud isn’t about suspicion or surveillance; it’s about fostering a culture of transparency, fairness, and accountability. No individual or organisation is immune from the threat of fraud, and the NHS is no exception. The NHSCFA estimates that the NHS is vulnerable to over £1.3 billion of fraud each year.
Here are some practical tips to help if you are unsure about how or where to report suspicions of fraud:
- speak up: You have protection under the Public Interest Disclosure Act 1998 when raising genuine concerns
- keep a record and preserve evidence: Note down what you’ve observed: names, dates, times, conversations, and witnesses. Sign and date your notes
- report your suspicions: Use the 24/7 confidential Fraud & Corruption Reporting Line (FCRL). You can report anonymously.
Trust your instincts - if something feels wrong, it probably is. Report NHS fraud concerns to us at cfa.nhs.uk/report-fraud or call 08000284060 (24/7 service). We handle every report confidentially, with anonymous options available. Connect with your Local Counter Fraud Specialist for direct support.
