With more than 250 delegates, the conference brought together counter fraud professionals from all parts of the healthcare sector. Its aim was to foster learning, discussion, and collaboration across the different parts of the NHS and to strengthen the response to fraud and building awareness.
The event welcomed experts from NHSCFA, the newly established PSFA, NHS Counter Fraud Services Scotland, NHS Counter Fraud Wales, and local trusts who discussed topics such as data sharing, insider fraud, Integrated Care Boards and different detection and prevention tactics.
Alex Rothwell, Chief Executive of the NHSCFA gave the opening keynote speech with an overview of the current climate and government finances including where we are now, understanding collaboration to support the NHS with the private sector, the 4 nations and international counterparts and how can we tackle the threats we know of and be prepared to tackle the ones we don’t.
Tricia Morrison, Director of Performance & Improvement at the NHSCFA followed with an informative presentation about the NHSCFAs imminent launch of our new strategy and the key role the counter fraud community played in developing this. Later on in the afternoon the authority’s Tim Barlow presented Demystifying Fraud Risk Assessment, Matthew Jordan Boyd spoke about the role of the NHS Finance Community in Counter Fraud and Richard Hampton facilitated a panel discussion around The Key to a Successful Counter Fraud Function (see https://nhsfraudconference.co.uk/agenda/ for details).
The NHSCFA stand received a steady influx of visitors keen to introduce themselves, get involved, share experiences, and take away our promo materials. There was a definite sea-change in the air of positivity and eagerness to collaborate with us as an organisation.
Alex Rothwell said, “The whole day was buzzing and the positivity and eagerness in the air was palpable. I am really pleased that I and colleagues from the NHSCFA were able to speak, chair discussions and contribute to inspiring collaboration across the NHS to detect and prevent fraud, bribery, and corruption.
Tricia Morrison said, "What a fantastic and motivational day. It was a real privilege to play a small part in the event and I felt very proud sharing the key themes from our soon to be released Strategy with the wider counter fraud community. The message of the importance of data, being proactive, collaboration and working together were well received and I have lots of great contacts to follow up on."
